How Instagram checks image metadata
Instagram inspects image headers during upload, checking for C2PA JUMBF manifests (APP11 in JPEG) and IPTC digital source types (trainedAlgorithmicMedia). It also checks for known AI generator signatures in XMP metadata.
Why false "Made with AI" labels occur
When photographers use Photoshop Generative Fill for minor object cleanup, or Lightroom Lens Blur, Adobe automatically attaches full C2PA provenance and IPTC metadata. Instagram reads these tags and treats the entire original photograph as synthetic.
What clean.hexalab removes for Instagram
clean.hexalab strips the C2PA manifest (APP11) and IPTC digital source tags at the byte level without re-compressing your image pixels or altering ICC color profiles.
Compliance and disclosure policy
Instagram community standards require disclosure of substantially AI-generated photorealistic imagery. If your image is genuinely synthetic, use Instagram's manual disclosure toggle.
